Cyclist Safety Tips

The Charlotte Department of Transportation provided these safety tips and guidelines designed to protect cyclists while riding in an urban environment.

- Wear a bicycle helmet at all times. Wearing a bicycle helmet could reduce your chance of head injuries by 85%

- Put a headlight on the front of your bike, especially if you plan to ride at night or early in the morning.

- Make sure you have a rear reflector on your bike. Or even better, purchase a red blinking strobe light and attach it to yourself or your bike to make you stand out in the dark.

- Wear appropriate clothing. Wear light or bright clothing, and make sure clothes fit snugly enough so they won't get caught in bike parts.

- Never wear headphones while riding because they can prevent you from hearing traffic.

- Keep your bike in good condition. Check the air pressure of the tires on at least a weekly basis. Make sure your brakes are working. Lubricate your bike chain frequently, and check to make sure it does not become stretched and loose. If it is in your budget, have your bike tuned up at your local bike shop – if not, learn to do maintenance and repairs yourself through books at the City's libraries. Never ride "double" (two to a bike, except in approved baby seats).
