The Inspiration for Cycle Charlotte:

On October 14th, 2006, S1 employee Todd Weaver, age 36, was tragically killed while commuting home from work on his bicycle. While the accident was tragic, it was an accident and a reminder as a cyclist we must be visible in the community, educate motorist and promote safe streets cycling.

Todd was a husband, father of two children, friend of all and an avid cyclist. In early 2005, Todd made a commitment to change his daily commute from an enclosed environment to one that exposed him to both the good and the bad of cycling in our city. Todd researched how to approach bicycle commuting with safety in mind and began riding with Brooks Gibson, another experienced bicycle commuter. During the initial rides, the two would meet at Lowe's Motor Speedway and ride together to uptown Charlotte then back at the end of the day. About twice a week, Todd rode his bike 24 miles from his home in Concord to his job near the Charlotte Coliseum and logged 48 miles for the round trip.

Todd will be remembered as an example of selflessness and dedication to his family. His enthusiasm and optimism in the labors of life continue to be an encouragement to all who knew him to live life and love family and friends to the fullest with no regrets.
